Although “leadership” is one of the most common words in English, its interpretation varies widely. But understanding some basic leadership concepts opens the door to more effective management.
First, responsible people are usually called “managers,” but they are expected to manage and lead. Management and leadership are two completely different events. Management involves the effective use of resources such as funds, supplies, graphics, systems, tools, equipment, etc. To manage these resources, special skills are needed, but none of these management & leadership skills for first-time supervisors & managers apply to working with people. On the other hand, when managers lead, they affect the performance of team members, so they perform in the best possible way, both individually and collectively. In short, you control things and lead people.
Another basic fact about leadership is that it’s not just what managers do. Most books on leadership refer to presidents, generals, and CEOs and the strategic things they do. The truth is that leaders, section leaders, and team leaders are also leaders. Your success mainly depends on how you handle your direct reports.
So, how do effective leaders make people perform in the best way?
# 1 –DEVELOP: To work in the best of cases, people need technical knowledge. As a manager, you optimize your skills by helping them to be stronger at work. To do this, indicate the expectations, the example, the instruction, the feedback, the experience training lessons, and the support for the training activities.
# 2 –INSPIRE: Team members may know how, but do they want to do their best work? You influence their desire to work using your motivation. Not withrah-rah performances or monetary incentives, but with leading by example, knowing their values, needs, and interests, expressing the vision of the team, assigning the right tasks to the right people and expressing appreciation for a job well done.
# 3 –SUPPORT: Think of yourself as a “server leader,” who gives team members what they need to be successful, eliminate barriers and highlight information and resources. These are things they do not have access to unless they are authorized through a chain of command. This occurs during delegation when responsibility, authority, and guidelines are shared with the task.
# 4 –FOSTER: The work is not easy. People almost always face adversity: problems, mistakes, shortcomings, and failures. When this happens, they may lose energy or leave. It must provide an opportune stimulus for people to overcome adversity and continue to strive.
As a manager, you’re responsible for these four areas of leadership. This will require effective leadership and personal strengths. You may not have such behaviors. A good manager applies the best practices every day and leads by example.
